Behind the scene of the new Amazon distribution center in Weiterstadt

Students take a look behind the scenes at the new Amazon distribution center in Weiterstadt.

On November 11th our MBA students and incoming international students had the opportunity to take a closer look behind the scenes of the Amazon distribution centre in Weiterstadt.

The tour started with the sorting area on the morning shift.  Here, the incoming parcels were labelled and then sorted. "I found it particularly exciting to see how the labels were shot onto the parcels using air pressure, then the completely automated conveyor technology and the associated automatic sorting," said Bhavani Pidugu, a Master of Business Administration student. Afterwards, the students were allowed to observe the sorting into carrier bags and finally the loading of the vehicles. "We were really impressed how well the up to 400 vehicles are timed and orchestrated in front of the warehouse, quickly loaded and sent on their tours. That was really cool to see," said Prof. Dirk Wollenweber

The tour through the 47,800 square metre site was rounded off by a presentations on Amazons’ operations, fleet management and route planning. Thank you very much to Oliver Knauff, change manager at Amazon, and his colleagues for taking the time for us and sharing their insight with us. That was really great. said Prof. Monika Futschik.
